The 39-year-old actor confirmed that he was recently hospitalised for "alcohol poisoning" and will seek professional treatment "next week".
"I got alcohol poisoning, a little too much fun so I'm on a straight path now," Jake vowed to TMZ. "I'm going all the way [with] AA and doing the clean living."
Landing Gary a high-profile acting role is Jake's top priority after ensuring his sobriety, he added.
"It's time to get him all the way with his career, get him back into a big film. I think I'm really the one person who can direct him… I'm the only one who can communicate with him," he said. "Nobody else knows how because he's got his own programme going. We have a really good communication and he listens to me. I think it could be really great."
A steadily working actor in his own right, Jake has starred in a string of successful movies, including Contact and Starship Troopers, as well as the short-lived TV series Shasta McNasty.
Crazy Eyes will next see him appear with Lukas Haas and former Twin Peaks actor Ray Wise.
