Conaway, who played Kenickie in the 1978 musical, died yesterday at the age of 60 following a suspected overdose. He had been in a coma since his admission to hospital over two weeks ago.
Remembering his friend and Celebrity Rehab co-star, Baldwin shared his "relief" that Conaway was finally at peace after years of battling with substance abuse.
He told E!: "I'm sad that Jeff is gone. In some ways his death evokes feelings of relief, as it appeared that he had been suffering for a long time.
"My prayers go out to his family and friends, to those who knew him in sobriety especially. Rest in peace, Jeff. You will be missed and loved forever. Peace be with you always."
Amongst those to have already paid respect to Conaway were his Grease co-star John Travolta, who described him as "a wonderful and decent man".
Conaway's Taxi colleague Marilu Henner today expressed hope that he would be remembered as "a big, loving person" and not a Celebrity Rehab contestant.
She said: "I was always happy to hear from him, and I hope younger kids don't think of him as just a guy from Celebrity Rehab because he was so much more."
