Maria Shriver has expressed her "gratitude and respect" for the men and women serving in the US armed forces.

Writing on her Twitter page over Memorial Day weekend, the actress took time out to encourage her followers to "be kind" to those who may be grieving the loss of a loved one who died in the line of duty.

"This weekend, I'm thinking of all who gave their life, and all the families who lost a loved one, in service to this great country," she wrote. "You have our deepest gratitude and respect. God bless.

"We don't know what's going on inside people. On this #MemorialDay, when so many are grieving in obscurity or silence, let's keep that in mind. Be kind, so many people are grieving."

The actress also shared wisdom relayed by her teenage daughter, adding: "My daughter once gave me a great Plato quote that said, 'Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle'. I love that. So true."

Shriver separated from husband of 25 years Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier this month after discovering that he had fathered a secret love child with a former housekeeper.

It has since been suggested that Shriver will file for divorce in the upcoming weeks and could receive up to $254m (£155m) as part of the settlement.
