The NBA star, who has played professional basketball for 19 years, announced his intention to retire from the sport via his Twitter page on Wednesday.
"We did it. 19 years baby. I want to thank you very much," he said in a video posted to his page on the social networking site.
"That's why I'm telling you I'm about to retire. Love you. Talk to you soon."
O'Neal began his career with the Orlando Magic in 1992 and has also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers. He is a 15-time NBA All-Star.
He divorced his estranged wife of eight years Shaunie - with whom he has four children - in 2010.
O'Neal was recently named the 'Best Male Athlete' at the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.
