Academy Award-winner Susan Sarandon has revealed that she fears for her life after unashamedly airing her views on the war in Iraq.
The star said that the media, teachers and people in the street had targetted both her and her family due to her views. In an ITV interview she told presenter Jonathan Dimbleby, “I don’t think I ever thought someone would ever really kill me, although there were some people who said ‘I’d like someone to knock her off’ on the radio and stuff like that."
Starring in the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe show The Guys, the actress ended her last performance of the 9/11-themed play by speaking out against the possible war with Iraq. She commented: “As an individual, I don’t think we would want to go to war against Iraq,” she said at the time. “I don’t think a military expression of violence is the solution.”
As one of the few actors voicing their opinions, Sarandon even feared for the future of her career. “When there is nobody else, when you look out on the field and everybody [in Hollywood] is quiet and they’re all looking away and nobody’s saying anything, it’s a really scary place to be.”
