The 2008 presidential candidate has been accused of using political funds in order to cover up his affair scandal and secret love child.
Edwards admitted to fathering a 2-year-old daughter with former mistress Rielle Hunter in January 2010, prompting his split from his former wife, the late Elizabeth Edwards.
Investigators allege that money paid to Hunter and former political aide Andrew Young to keep the scandal under wraps was pulled from campaign donations illegally.
"It's hard, but they're a family - always have been, always will be - and they are sticking together," an insider told People of Edwards and 29-year-old daughter Cate, who had no comment on the charges.
Edwards is expected to appear at the United States District Court Middle District of North Carolina in Winston-Salem on Friday to answer to six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements.
