Boyzone star in homophobic attack
Published Tuesday, May 2 2006, 07:46 BST | By Matthew Houghton
Former Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has had to rethink plans to live in the English countryside after being the subject of homophobic attacks.
The star, 30, who lives with long-term partner and entrepreneur Andy Cowles, went public about his sexuality in 1999 and thought that people were comfortable with him being gay.
But since appearing in the stage adaptation of the Wizard of Oz at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, Gately has been tormented with homophobic abuse.
A recent attack saw him cornered by a group of men outside the theatre, forcing an off-duty police officer to step in.
The disappointed star admitted, "Canterbury is beautiful and I loved it. When I first arrived I thought seriously about buying a property here."
