Jim Carrey has credited his father Percy with inspiring him to become an actor.

The 49-year-old star revealed that his dad's striking presence made a significant impression on his future career path.

"Really since the very beginning, I looked at my father and he was commanding the room," he recalled to OK. "Every time we had people over, he would stand in the middle of the room and I was astounded at his creativity and his animation when he told a story and I was just like, there is no choice for me."

In his latest movie Mr. Popper's Penguins, the actor portrays a businessman whose life is turned upside down when he inherits six unruly penguins.

While his character Tom Popper struggles to cope with animals, Carrey affirmed that he had a much more pleasant experience with the creatures.

He added: "I loved working with the real penguins... I kind of like to join their energy... They made love!"

Carrey recently opened up about his relationship with 1-year-old grandson Jackson Riley, describing the boy's birth as a moment of "pure bliss".

Mr. Popper's Penguins opens on June 17 in US cinemas and on August 5 in the UK.
