The 'Lean Back' rapper, born Joseph Antonio Cartagena, confessed that he became motivated to shed the weight after seven of his friends - none of whom were above the age of 40 - died as a result of a heart attack last year.
"What's the difference between me and them? Health doesn't discriminate just because I'm famous," he told The New York Daily News.
Fat Joe, who lost the weight via a healthy diet and daily two-hour cardio workouts with a personal trainer, also told the publication that he was terrified of passing away before getting to see his young daughter grow up.
"I can't leave my daughter behind. I want to be here for her; I don't want to die on her," he said.
However, he insisted that while he is now on the right path, he must continue to stay focused in order not to regain the weight, adding: "I'm addicted to food; I love food. It's like a crack addict - he hits rock bottom and he says, 'All right, forget it. I'm not going to get high anymore'."
Fat Joe previously praised 50 Cent for the dramatic weight loss he underwent as part of his role in the film Things Fall Apart.
