The musician is believed to be responsive after undergoing two brain surgeries to reduce swelling caused by a possible blood clot, a source told New York City's Fox affiliate WNYW.
While the 69-year-old saxophonist was initially believed to be paralysed on much of the left side of his body, the insider revealed that Clemons was able to squeeze his left hand.
Clemons's vital signs are also improving.
Lady GaGa, who recently enlisted Clemons to play on her LP Born This Way, has offered public support for the performer and professed that their upcoming collaboration on the 'Edge of Glory' music video will stand as a tribute to the E Street Band's famed 'Big Man'.
She tweeted: "In bed with Mommy thinking about Clarence, I can't wait for you to see the beautiful video we made together. He's a really special person."
Clemons first joined Springsteen's backing group in 1972 and has played frequently with the E Street Band for nearly 40 years.
Aside from his work with Springsteen, Clemons has released eight solo LPs, the most recent being 2008's Brothers in Arms.
