The Playboy magazine founder confirmed that Harris called off their engagement this week, just days before they were scheduled to tie the knot at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.
Harris later explained her reasons for separating with Hefner in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, saying that she didn't feel it was the right thing for her to do because she hadn't been "at peace with [herself] lately".
However, Hefner has now told followers on Twitter that he is still confused by what went wrong in their relationship.
"Crystal did an interview with Ryan Seacrest this morning to explain everything, but I still don't have a clue," he wrote. "I didn't see any of this coming, but I'm glad things went wrong before the marriage instead of after. Live & learn (sic)."
Hefner, 85, also revealed that Harris's close friend Anna has been offering her support in the aftermath of the break-up.
"She didn't see this coming either, & she's Crystal's best friend," he added.
Other friends and family who have offered their support to Hefner include his former girlfriends and Girls Next Door stars Holly Madison, Kendra Wilkinson and Bridget Marquardt.
Marquardt visited the Playboy Mansion when news of the split broke, while Madison has also comforted Hefner in person. "Holly came by to wish me well," he wrote. "The outpouring of support & affection from so many quarters is really touching."
Hefner has now altered the cover of Playboy magazine's July issue to reflect his broken engagement. The publication, which is on sale Friday, features a picture of Harris alongside a headline calling her 'Mrs Hefner'. Hefner has since ordered a red sticker saying 'Runaway Bride' to be attached to newsstand copies.
