The Spider-Man actor is being sued for playing unlicensed poker games with jailed criminal Bradley Ruderman, reports Star magazine.
Ruderman is in prison for running a ponzi scheme that lost his clients approximately $25 million (£15.5 million). Given that the criminal's company is now facing bankruptcy, the trustees are attempting to find the lost money, claiming that a portion of it was used in the illegal poker games. Maguire is subsequently being sued for his winnings from these games with Ruderman.
Director Nick Cassavetes has been named in the case as well.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon also participated in the games, according to TMZ, but the actors are not named in the suit.
Playing for money at underground poker clubs is against the law in California, although none of the participants are believed to be under criminal investigation.
Maguire will soon produce an adaptation of The Little Mermaid that focuses on a princess's battle to save her kingdom and win the heart of her prince.
The 35-year-old will also star opposite DiCaprio in an upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby.
