Royal wedding fund raises more than £1 million

Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding fund has raised more than £1 million ($1.62 million) for charity.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had requested that people who wanted to buy them a wedding gift donate money to the Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund instead.

The money raised will be used to benefit 26 different charities personally selected by the royal couple. The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry will distribute the money among the organisations.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted that these charities are able to benefit so positively from their special day," a spokesperson for the couple told The Daily Telegraph.

"They would like to thank everyone who donated and contributed so generously to the charitable fund and for all the kindness and support shown to them throughout the wedding period."

Money was raised through donations from the public and wedding guests, as well as wedding-related projects, including the sale of the Royal Wedding Album and a donation by Mario Testino's office from sales of their wedding photograph in the official brochure.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge married at Westminster Abbey on April 29 and later enjoyed a private honeymoon in the Seychelles.

They are currently preparing for their first overseas state visit as a married couple, which will see them visiting Canada and Los Angeles.
