Guy Pearce: 'I took way too many drugs'

Guy Pearce has said that he took "way too many drugs" after achieving major success as an actor.

The Mildred Pierce star told Metro that he "had a bit of a breakdown" after the success of LA Confidential and Memento at the end of the 1990s.

Pearce said: "'I was being offered typical leading-man roles and found it all vacuous. I was a grumpy b**tard - telling people to f**k off for things that really didn't deserve that kind of response.

"I had no tolerance for anything but I would suffer terrible guilt and apologise later - I didn't want to be a horrible person and I knew I needed to sort that out."

He added: "I was also taking way too many drugs - smoking mainly but pretty much anything you can think of, I took. I don't have the constitution to handle drugs and alcohol like some people - I gave it a good go."
