The film stars Liv Tyler, Charlie Hunnam and Patrick Wilson, and confronts the issue of atheism versus religion, though Tyler herself admitted that it can be hard to explain the film's premise.
"I play a woman who had problems with drugs and prostitution, and then she meet's Patrick Wilson's character and they get married," she told Popeater. "He is a born again evangelical Christian. He basically saves her life and then she meets a man played by Charlie Hunnam and they have an affair and he's an atheist."
Tyler denied suggestions that the film propagates a negative view of those who describe themselves as 'born again', and insisted that the film is about looking beyond people's initial preconceptions.
"The message I got from making this film is that the world, especially now with the Internet, we're so quick to judge people based on their clothing, sexual preference, religion, food they like," she explained. "I guess I came to realise from this that you really don't know what people have been through unless you find out."
Tyler added that although she is not a religious person she does hold the belief that there is something out there that is bigger than herself.
Earlier this week Tyler confirmed that she would not be reprising her role as the Arwen in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit films.
The Ledge is due out in cinemas on July 8.
