Blaine set to complete underwater stunt
Published Monday, May 8 2006, 16:43 BST | By Miriam Zendle
David Blaine is preparing to finish his stunt of living underwater for seven days.
The 33-year-old illusionist has spent the week living in a water-filled sphere, sustained only by tubes feeding him nutrients and oxygen.
Blaine has already been treated for deterioration in his skin and his overall condition. His spokesman Pat Smith noted: "[The doctors are] worried about loss of dexterity. There is considerable concern about both his hands and his muscle tone."
In order to receive medical attention, Blaine stuck his hand out of a hole at the top of a tank, allowing doctors to remove specially created gloves, apply lotion and put on new gloves.
Blaine's submersion in the tank could lead to nerve damage, sleep deprivation problems and even irreversible brain injury. He has said his skin feels like "constant pins and needles."
