Steve Martin proposes to Alec Baldwin on Twitter

Steve Martin has jokingly asked Alec Baldwin to marry him.

The Father of the Bride actor tweeted the 30 Rock star shortly after the legalisation of gay marriage in New York, declaring that the two can finally be wed.

"Alec! Now we can get married!" Martin wrote.

Baldwin responded positively, albeit with a caveat: "Ok. But if you play that effing banjo after eleven o'clock.... (sic)."

On Saturday, How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris announced his engagement to his partner David Burtka on Twitter after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo officially legalised gay marriage in the state the day before.

The couple welcomed fraternal twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace via a surrogate in October.

Martin was recently named as one of the victims in Germany's largest ever art forgery scandal.

In early June, Baldwin revealed that he is considering a campaign for New York City mayor.
