The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were seated in the front row of the royal box for Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet's fourth round match.
Murray acknowledged the royal couple by bowing at the end of the match and later told the BBC that he only learned the pair would be in attendance when a journalist told him as he left the practice courts.
"I didn't know if my source was correct or if they were winding me up," The Daily Telegraph quotes him as saying. "It's great for tennis for royalty to come along."
A spokesperson added that the royal couple had visited Wimbledon in a "private capacity".
The Duke and Duchess are currently preparing for their first overseas state visit as a married couple. They will begin a tour of Canada in Ottawa on June 30, before travelling to other areas including Prince Edward Island and Calgary.
The newly-weds will also spend time in Los Angeles, where their itinerary includes a visit to the Santa Barbara Polo Club.
The Duke and Duchess married at Westminster Abbey on April 29 and later enjoyed a private honeymoon in the Seychelles.
