The Prometheus actress discussed her views on marriage - which she described as a "divine right" for both gay and straight people - during an interview on Piers Morgan Tonight.
"I'll be the first to say, here on your show, marriage - before I felt this way about [marriage equality] - was never something that was important to me. I don't know the exact reason for that," Theron explained. "Some would say because I came from a very troubled marriage," she said. "My parents did not have a good marriage, but I don't think it's that."
The Oscar winner went on to say that while she aims to have a stable relationship, she does not feel that walking down the aisle serves any purpose in her life.
Theron continued: "I really want for myself a long-term relationship, and I have been in long-term relationships... That's the kind of union that I want.
"The actual ceremony is not something that is important to me - but I see the importance for other people."
Theron was previously involved in a nine year relationship with Stuart Townsend, though the pair split in January 2010.
