The Big Year actor joined the social media website in September 2010, using the website to post jokes and even tweet up-to-the-minute coverage of his jury duty service.
Martin, who has more than 1.3 million Twitter followers, explained that he appreciates the opportunity to share his irreverent observations at a moment's notice.
"I'm just doing it free-form and making it up as I go along. It actually is fun for me," the star told USA Today.
Martin continued: "It's funny to be walking down the hallway and have a tweet appear in your mind… and not knowing really where it comes from. That unpredictability to myself might mean it's unpredictable to the audience in the same way."
In June, Martin used Twitter to jokingly propose marriage to his It's Complicated co-star and fellow former Academy Awards host Alec Baldwin.
The Big Year debuts in US cinemas on October 14 and is released in the UK on November 11.
