The Tree of Life actor praised the decision to pass New York's Marriage Equality Act but insisted that all states should follow suit as he believes that everyone has the right to tie the knot with whoever they wish.
Pitt told People: "It is encouraging that New York has joined the movement to grant equal marriage rights to its citizens. But it is each American's constitutional right to marry the person they love, no matter what state they inhabit.
"No state should decide who can marry and who cannot. Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage."
Pitt is the latest celeb to speak out in favour of legalising gay marriage. Lady GaGa and Neil Patrick Harris recently voiced their excitement over the legislation in New York, with Harris later revealing that he and longtime partner David Burtka had become engaged following the passing of the new law.
George Takei has described the success of the Marriage Equality Act as a victory for civil rights while Law & Order: SVU star Christopher Meloni filmed a PSA for the Human Rights Campaign in support of the bill last month.
