R Kelly has undergone an emergency throat operation, according to his publicist.

The R&B superstar is said to have complained of throat pain recently and was rushed to Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital for surgery yesterday.

R Kelly's publicist Allan Mayer told reporters that the singer had an abscess on one of his tonsils, which had to be drained.

Mayer added that R Kelly will now be "laid up indefinitely" at the hospital, which means that he will also be pulling out of Jamaica's Reggae Sumfest festival.

R Kelly is also facing a $2.9m (£1.8m) foreclosure suit on his Chicago-area mansion after claims that he had not paid his mortgage since June 2010.

He recently released a remixed version of Britney Spears's 'Till The World Ends'.
