The Star Trek actor commented that he has grown tired of seeing minor details of celebrities' private lives scrutinised in the media.
Shatner told Access Hollywood Live: "Tabloid stuff just offends… I can't stand the gossip of celebrities' lives, all the time! Every minute!"
Shatner went on to cite the News of the World phone hacking scandal as proof that the press have been malicious in their attempts to land a juicy headline.
"It's so bad to see these people's lives so minutely examined… Look at what it's come to in England, the hacking into the phone system," the star added. "It has risen to that point, where interest in people's lives [leads people] to break the law… It's terrible."
Shatner was recently praised by Cee Lo Green for covering the singer's chart-topping hit 'F**k You!' during an appearance on Lopez Tonight .
The Captains, Shatner's documentary on the Star Trek franchise, opens in US cinemas on Friday.
Shatner's third studio LP Searching For Major Tom is to be released later this year.
