The Girls Aloud star's lawyers are apparently investigating internet claims by someone purporting to be a former employee of the News Of The World.
The insider at the now-defunct tabloid alleges that Cole's voicemails were intercepted "while she underwent treatment for malaria" - although the source refused to name the culprits.
A spokesman for Cole's agents Supersonic PR declined to comment, but a source told the Daily Star that the company has obtained details of the tweets in order to investigate the allegations further.
Cole was diagnosed with malaria last summer after contracting the disease in Africa.
She is said to be considering marrying former husband Ashley again after he proposed to her over the phone last Wednesday.
