The Going the Distance star confirmed the news on Friday, claiming that the pregnancy had been planned for some time.
Day told People: "We've got a kid due in December. We're five months along and she's feeling great.
"We're excited. We decided now if the time, and we were fortunate that it happened."
Day and Ellis star together on FX sitcom It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia but filming schedules mean they will both be on hiatus when the baby is due.
"It's going to time out perfectly," Day added. "We live in Los Angeles, my East Coast family and her Southern family may have to come see us this Christmas!"
Day recently starred opposite the likes of Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston in Seth Gordon's R-rated comedy Horrible Bosses.
