Fielder-Civil, who married Winehouse in 2007, was told of her death in prison where he is currently serving a 32-month sentence for burglary and a firearms offence.
Fielder-Civil told The Sun: "I'm beyond inconsolable... my tears won't dry.
"I will never ever again feel the love I felt for her. Everybody who knew me and knew Amy knew the depth of our love. I can't believe she's dead."
The paper also reports that Fielder-Civil collapsed when he was given the news and that prison staff have been asked to keep a close eye on him.
Fielder-Civil's mother Georgette Civil has expressed concerns that her son could take his own life, saying that he "won't make it without her".
Winehouse and Fielder-Civil divorced in 2009 after a tumultuous marriage.
The singer's death is currently being treated as "unexplained", and a post-mortem is expected to take place today at the earliest.
