The reality TV star, who has been clean for 19 months, said that she can relate to the 'Rehab' singer, who was found dead in her home on Saturday.
Katona told Now: "I could not stop thinking how lucky I was to find the strength that I found to get myself out of the s**t that I was in.
"Amy was so young, but I can so relate to what she was doing. It can be so easy to get some drugs in, have a few drinks and lose sight of reality."
The 30-year-old explained that her responsibility to her four children was what made her kick the habit.
"I feel so sad about Amy and my heart goes out to all her friends, her family, her fans and everyone who knew and loved her," Katona added.
"But if you mess with drugs, you've got to deal with the consequences before it's too late."
