The actor, who plays a successful businessman who inherits six penguins after his father's death, told The Associated Press that the extreme temperature changes necessary on set caused his body to go into overdrive and almost made him pass out on several occasions.
Carrey recalled: "It was freezing on set all the time, just 30 degrees - I was dying but the penguins were very happy.
"Then we'd go outside and do a scene on the roof where it was 80 degrees and I had to be in a parka and five layers of clothing. I literally almost fainted at one point. I was like, 'Get it off' and they had to tear the coat off me."
Carrey recently said that he felt close to his Mr Popper's Penguins character as he understands his motivations.
He previously described the experience of working with live penguins for the film as "magical".
