The actor and wife Sarah Jessica Parker were forced to cancel several appearances in the Hamptons last weekend so that Broderick could have the procedure, his rep tells Page Six.
Broderick's spokesperson said: "Matthew had a sports injury some time ago. He pulled something in his back and recently underwent routine surgery. It was a simple procedure, he is fine and is up and about and back at home."
Tony Award winner Broderick chose to have the operation so he could be in top shape for his Broadway return in Nice Work If You Can Get It.
Nice Work If You Can Get It features the story of a Prohibition-era womaniser (Broderick) set to the music of George and Ira Gershwin.
The play, which will be directed by Kathleen Marshall, opens in spring 2012.
Broderick's next film Tower Heist is released in US and UK cinemas on November 4.
