The 'Beautiful Girls' singer was admitted to intensive care in May after losing control of a jet ski while at a party with friends in Miami.
"We had been riding earlier but took a break. Then we wanted to go back out again. I tried to go under a bridge but when I saw the tide had gotten high I tried to hit the brakes but it was too late," he told Natalie Morales on Today.
"As soon as I hit the bridge I was knocked out unconscious."
Kingston's surgeon Antonio Marttos told the NBC show that the singer "tried to die a couple of times" following the trauma, but they "refused" to let him, and he was eventually released after undergoing open heart surgery to repair a torn aorta.
"I'm just getting back healthy and recovering," Kingston told Morales. "It feels great [to be alive]. It's a blessing. God is great. I feel like I'm blessed to overcome a tragic situation. There was definitely trauma and for me to be here is God's work."
As for why he thinks he survived the accident, he said: "I think my work is not done. It wasn't my time yet."
Kingston made his debut television concert appearance on Today back in 2007, and told Morales that he hopes to return to the show for his first post-accident performance later this year.
