The Australian television and radio personality, who is best known as the morning show host on 2DayFM, caused outrage among the Hindu community when he labelled the sacred Ganges river as a "junkyard" and India as a "s**thole".
According to the Herald Sun, the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism Rajan Zed later urged the Australian Media and Communications Authority to take "appropriate action" over Sandilands's comments.
Sandilands then issued a statement saying: "I'm apologising. Anyone that's Indian that listens to this show knows that I love Indians... I don't discriminate. I love everyone. I just made the mistake that the river, which, to me, looks polluted, I said it was a junkyard and I did not realise that it was holy."
The radio star recently caused controversy when he referred to supermodel Megan Gale as a "phoney", called rival DJ Merrick Watts a "fat slob" and then labelled chatshow host Rove McManus a "little pr*ck".
He has also been reprimanded for revealing details of a TV show in the pipeline before it was confirmed by industry bosses.
