Police arrived at the athlete's Hollywood home after midnight on Friday to respond to a noise complaint, but Avery refused to comply with their request to turn down his music.
When a scuffle broke out between the New York Rangers left wing and a police officer, Avery was arrested and transported to a nearby precinct.
Bail has apparently been set at $20,000 (£12,206).
An LAPD spokesperson told People: "He is in jail and still here - he will be bailing out shortly. He battered one of our officers."
Avery, who once dated 24's Elisha Cuthbert, has played for the New York Rangers since 2009.
