Ansari made a surprise appearance at comedy club Largo at the Coronet on Friday to take part in a question-and-answer session with the audience.
The mood turned tense when one woman asked the comedian, who is of Indian descent, why he does not have "a red dot on [his] forehead".
Ansari responded by questioning why the woman didn't have the word "c**t on [her] forehead" and later insisted that there are still too many "racist" people in modern society.
The comic was able to carry on his act following the on-stage argument, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Ansari will next star in the movie 30 Minutes or Less, which opens on August 12 in the US and October 16 in the UK.
His series Parks and Recreation returns for its fourth season on September 22 on NBC.
