Stars including Ben Harper and Daryl Hannah have started a tree-top protest against a community garden being destroyed.
Around 350 people have been growing crops on the Los Angeles garden since 1992, but its owner recently demanded $16 million for them to keep it. Their deadline having passed on Monday, he now wants to reclaim the land for development.
Actress Daryl Hannah joined the protest and asked for help to raise the necessary cash. "We've come up with $6 million, which is unbelievable," she commented. "If everyone in the city just gave one dollar, this place could be saved."
Veteran anti-war campaigner - and folk singer - Joan Baez also joined the resistance and sung protest anthem 'We Shall Overcome' to gathered reporters. Actress Laura Dern and blues musician Ben Harper are also among the celebrities present.
