During an episode of his Adam Carolla Show podcast last week, the broadcaster shocked listeners by claiming that the acronym "YUCK" should be used in place of "LGBT" and asking "When did we start giving a s**t about these [transgender] people?"
Carolla's speech came after he was questioned about his thoughts on a Sesame Street spokesperson's recent insistence that classic puppets Ernie and Bert are not gay.
The outburst sparked criticism from advocacy group GLAAD (Gays and Lesbians Alliance Against Defamation), who told TMZ: "The gross intolerance that [Carolla] tries to pass off as comedy should not have a place on our airwaves."
While initially refusing to comment, Carolla has since told the website that his comments were not meant to be taken seriously, saying: "I'm sorry my comments were hurtful. I'm a comedian, not a politician."
The Adam Carolla Show recently broke a Guinness World Record for most downloaded podcast.
Carolla is currently working on developing a new animation show with the Fox network.
