The 21-year-old announced his intentions to run for mayor of his hometown Wasilla last year, later telling The View that he was serious about his political ambitions and saying that he wanted to ensure the town remained a "great place" for its residents.
However, his lawyer Rex Butler has now told The AP that Johnston is too busy to run in the upcoming October 4 race.
Johnston, who is father to Bristol's young son Tripp, is scheduled to begin a book tour to promote his tell-all memoir Deer in the Headlights: My Life in Sarah Palin's Crosshairs in the coming weeks.
In a statement earlier this year, he said: "I want to tell the truth about my close relationship with the Palins. My sense of Sarah and my perplexing fall from grace - how I feel and what I've learned. I'm doing this for me, for my boy Tripp and for the country."
Johnston and Bristol separated shortly after becoming parents to Tripp in December 2008. They reconciled in 2010 but separated for a second time that August.
Deer In The Headlights will be released through Touchstone Publishing this fall.
