The Lord of the Rings star, who played the dwarf Gimli in the trilogy of films, faces a substantial tax bill, according to The Detroit News.
Papers acquired by the website suggest that the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) filed a tax lien in order to secure payment from the actor last month.
In July, Rhys-Davies was tapped for a role in the USA series Psych. He will play an eccentric curator of the Santa Barbara Art Museum.
The actor ruled out appearing in The Hobbit films back in 2009, saying: "There's a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more."
The year before, Rhys-Davies had said that he would consider a role in one of the two planned Hobbit movies.
