The Australian supermodel, who has a son called Flynn with her Pirates of the Caribbean actor husband Orlando Bloom, said that she still feels "sadness" about the fact that her cousin killed himself after battling depression.
Kerr told The Courier-Mail: "The sadness of losing someone, especially in these circumstances, is something we live with and we continually question how it could be prevented."
The star has now publicly backed the Kids Helpline campaign to help fight youth suicide. "There's not really a great awareness about the services available to kids, and that's why I'm behind this great cause," she said.
"If we can reach just one child and let them know there is someone out there who wants to listen, that could help to save their life. I believe if my cousin had known of Kids Helpline it may have saved his life."
Actor David Field has also lent his support to Kids Helpline's 'Too Many Too Soon' commercial, which is currently being filmed in Sydney.
