Harry Connick Jr has revealed that he has always been confident that New Orleans would recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The singer spearheaded numerous relief efforts for New Orleans following the devastating hurricane in 2005, eventually becoming honorary chairman of Habitat for Humanity's Operation Home Delivery charity.

Connick has now said that he is very proud of his hometown's "resurgence".

"[New Orleans is] starting to think about progress," he told Parade.

"Katrina shed a lot of light on its problems, but New Orleans is such a charismatic, diverse place that it's no surprise the city's experiencing a resurgence."

Earlier this year, Connick joked that he was denied a spot on American Idol's judging panel because his hair was too short.

Connick stars with Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman in the new movie Dolphin Tale, which opens on September 23 in the US and on October 14 in the UK.
