The British-born novelist, who moved to California more than a decade ago, said that she only has to walk down the street in Hollywood to find compelling characters.
"I live in Hollywood, so inspiration is everywhere," she joked to Parade. "Los Angeles is full of crazy characters."
Collins went on to reveal that even after writing more than 25 novels, she never grows tired of creating "rags-to-riches stories".
"[Rags-to-riches tales are] the great American dream," she added.
Collins's latest book Goddess of Vengeance is released on September 13 in the US.
