Leonardo DiCaprio and his two bodyguards were recently mistaken for robbers as they shopped at a Sydney jewellery store.

The owner of the Family Jewels shop in Sydney has revealed that both a clerk and customer failed to recognise DiCaprio, who was wearing a hoodie and dark glasses as he approached the store.

Family Jewels owner Kane Kelfken told The Sydney Daily Telegraph: "[The clerk] Linda sent the customer next door to get me, thinking the shop is about to be robbed by these guys.

"By the time I get in there Linda has realised who she was serving and let me know everything was all right."

Kelfken said DiCaprio was "very friendly" as he searched for a gift for his mother Irmelin.

The Inception actor is in Sydney to film director Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby.

In August, DiCaprio celebrated girlfriend Blake Lively's birthday with a romantic dinner overlooking Sydney Harbour.

DiCaprio will next star in J. Edgar, which opens on November 9 in the US and on January 20, 2012 in the UK.
