The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star became a father when Latiano gave birth to son Miles Robert on Monday in Los Angeles.
Howerton discussed the birth during an appearance on Conan on Wednesday, where he admitted that the couple had not decided upon a name before meeting their child.
"It was a last resort thing. My wife and I thought it would be a good idea to wait to see the baby first before we actually decided what his name would be," he explained.
"That wasn't a good idea. We thought it would be a good idea to get a sense of the guy. Then we saw him and he looked like a tiny little baby alien grandpa creature and I was like, 'I'm not getting any information from this at all!'"
Howerton and Latiano, who married in September 2009, announced the pregnancy in July.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis also revealed this summer that they will become parents this autumn.
