The 'Milkshake' singer revealed last week that she had been insulted at an airport by a 50-year-old Briton.
It initially appeared as though the altercation took place in London, and the capital's mayor Boris Johnson promised to investigate.
Kelis later clarified that the incident in fact happened in Spain, but she told the Evening Standard that London still has difficulties surrounding race that need to be resolved.
"Yes, it was a terrible thing to happen, but I'm a strong person and I can take it," she said. "I won't let that ruin anything for me.
"I have been coming to London for years because I love it here, I always have. But there are problems in this city that need to be addressed."
Speaking backstage at Vivienne Westwood's show at London's Fashion Week, she added: "It takes more than one jackass to stop me from enjoying this beautiful city."
