The 'Chariot' singer was hospitalised last month after being assaulted by a group of strangers in New York City's East Village during a night out.
He suffered a broken nose, concussion and two black eyes as a result of the incident but was released a few days later to finish his recovery at home.
DeGraw told MTV News that while he had a "rough night", he has not allowed the attack to alter his perception of the city.
"I happened to have a rough night in New York. But the whole night wasn't rough. Actually for the most part, the night was amazing. I just had a rough couple of minutes at the end of it," he explained.
"If New York was a casino, the odds are pretty good. I've had thousands of great nights out in New York, and I lost at the roulette wheel one night, but I usually win big money."
DeGraw returned to the stage late last month after he was forced to cancel several concerts following his assault.
