On Tuesday, President Barack Obama officially repealed the rule that had barred soldiers from being asked about or revealing their sexuality.
GaGa took to Twitter to tout the end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell as a landmark for LGBT acceptance in the US.
She wrote: "What a tremendous & beautiful day, DADT is officially repealed & the new order is in place. Sending all my love & gratitude to service members."
In September 2010, GaGa appeared at a Portland political rally to show her support for gays and lesbians who wished to serve openly in the military.
She told the crowd: "Our new law is called 'If you don't like it, go home'. If you are not committed to perform with excellence as a United States soldier because you don't believe in full equality, go home!
"If you are not honorable enough to fight without prejudice, go home! If you are not capable of keeping your oath to the armed forces to defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic 'and I will prepare true faith and allegiance to do the same unless there's a gay solider in my unit', then go home!"
This week, Lady GaGa received six MTV EMA nominations, including nods in the 'Best Live Act' and 'Best Female' categories.
