The Moneyball actor was forced to clarify remarks he made about Aniston after he was quoted recently as saying that he wasn't living an "interesting" life while the pair were married.
In an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show airing Thursday, Pitt once again spoke out in support of Aniston, describing her as a "dear friend" who should not be constantly dragged into negative press reports.
"I don't want [people] to say anything bad like that about Jen. She's a dear friend of mine," he explained.
"The best thing I'd done as a father is be sure that my kids have a good mother. I think it's a shame that I can't say something nice about Angie without Jen being dragged in. She doesn't deserve it."
Aniston was reportedly 'annoyed' by Pitt's initial comments about their relationship, finding them "rude and inappropriate".
Moneyball opens in the US on September 23 and November 25 in the UK.
