Miley Cyrus campaigns against farmland development in Australia

Miley Cyrus has joined a community campaign to help save farmland at her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth's hometown of Phillip Island.

The teenage singer, who has been dating Australian actor Hemsworth on and off for over a year, took to her Twitter page to fight the State Government's plan to build 200 new homes on sensitive coastal farmland near Ventnor and won.

Cyrus wrote on the microblogging website earlier this week: "Phillip Island is such a magical place, it would be a shame to see it change."

The day after the message, Planning Minister Matthew Guy announced that the development would not be going ahead, but insisted that Cyrus had no impact on the government's decision.

"I can swear on a stack of Bibles and say I actually wasn't sure who she was", he told AAP. "I couldn't even tell you what she looks like.

"I'm of a demographic who knows her father, Billy Ray Cyrus as opposed to Miley Cyrus. I could not give a stuff what Miley Cyrus thinks.''

Opposition spokesman Brian Tee, however, said: "It is a sad state of affairs when it takes Miley Cyrus to intervene before [the government] will listen to the concerns of the local community."

After the announcement, Guy's spokesperson said: "It's fantastic that Ms Cyrus recognises the beauty of Phillip Island, and the Government can assure her that it has no intention of spoiling the natural landscape of this unique area."
