The Melancholia actress, who was treated for depression in 2008, believes that "most humans" suffer from the condition.
"People are embarrassed to talk about it. I would never put anyone down [who] was in that kind of space," she told Flare magazine.
"I think most human beings go through some sort of depression in their life - and if they don't, I think that's weird."
Earlier this year, Dunst confessed that she had shed many tears over past boyfriends. Her ex-lovers include Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Long and Josh Hartnett.
The 29-year-old won the 'Best Actress' award at the Cannes Film Festival in May for the critically acclaimed Lars Von Trier film Melancholia, which will be released in the UK on September 30 and will receive a limited release in US cinemas on November 11.
