The Bones star admitted last year that he'd cheated on Bergman with another woman, who was alleged to be Tiger Woods's former mistress Rachel Uchitel.
Bergman and Boreanaz eventually entered marriage counselling in order to work through their problems.
Boreanaz claims that the couple ultimately reconciled after confronting the trauma caused by his affair.
"[It became] a bonding experience, in the long run… In a sacred ground like marriage, you find yourself out of it at certain times for reasons unknown that can be destructive," the actor told TV Week.
"There could be a demon that kind of comes out and overtakes you… Do I believe in giving up? No, I don't. I'm a fighter. I'm a lover."
Bergman and Boreanaz tied the knot on November 24, 2001 and are the parents to 9-year-old son Jaden and 2-year-old daughter Bella.
Boreanaz's series Bones kicks off its seventh season on Thursday, November 3 at 9/8c on Fox.
