Legendary country singer Loretta Lynn has been forced to cancel several performances after being hospitalised with pneumonia.

The 76-year-old has cancelled concerts in Kentucky and North Carolina on the advice of her doctors.

"Doctors have diagnosed her as the beginning stages of pneumonia and will continue to need rest," Lynn's official website reads.

"Loretta is doing well and is disappointed but feels confident she will be ready for upcoming November dates."

Lynn was previously forced to cancel a number of shows in August this year after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery.

The singer was nominated for 'Collaborative Video of the Year' at the CMT Music Awards 2011 for her version of 'Coal Miner's Daughter' with Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert.
